School Reform From The Inside Out: Policy, Practice, And Performance Reviews

School Reform From The Inside Out: Policy, Practice, And Performance

Giving test results to an incoherent, badly run school doesn’t automatically make it a better school. The work of turning a school around entails improving the knowledge and skills of teachers-changing their knowledge of content and how to teach it-and helping them to understand where their students are in their academic development. Low-performing schools, and the people who work in them, don’t know what to do. If they did, they would be doing it already.

So writes Richard Elmore in Unwarranted Intrusion, an essay critiquing the accountability mandates and high-stakes testing policies of the No Child Left Behind Act. In School Reform from the Inside Out, one of the country’s leading experts on the successes and failures of American education policy tackles issues ranging from teacher development to testing to failing schools. As Elmore aptly notes, successful school reform begins from the inside out with teachers, administrators, and school staff, not with external mandates or standards. This collection of some of Elmore’s most probing and influential essays is essential reading for any school leader, education reformer, policymaker, or citizen interested in the forces that promote real school change.

Voices of Reform Rural Transformation at West Carter Middle School

West Carter Middle School serves fewer than 500 students in the small town of Olive Hill in the rural Appalachian region of Kentucky. Between 2000-2004, the school faced persistent low achievement in math and reading proficiency. A transformation was needed and in 2005 a new principal was hired bringing about an increase in collaboration among staff. Double lessons of math and reading were added to the daily class schedule. The percentage of students testing proficient and advanced in math has increased 50 points since the new principal was hired in 2005. Today, West Carter now ranks among the top 15% of middle schools in Kentucky and in 2010, was honored as a “School to Watch” by the Kentucky Forum to Accelerate Middle Grades Reform.

A Guide to Special Education Advocacy

A Guide to Special Education Advocacy

Disability law can be complex and intimidating, so how can concerned parents use it to ensure their child with a disability receives the appropriate education they are legally entitled to?

A Guide to Special Education Advocacy gives strategies for advocating for better provision of special education in schools. Despite the many services and accommodations that have been made for students with disabilities, such as the use of Braille or providing specialized education in a regular or special classroom, many children with disabilities do not get the services they need and are not placed in appropriate programs or settings. Because of this, the perception of disability often remains unchanged. Matthew Cohen’s insightful manual gives a practical vision of how a parent or a professional can become an advocate to achieve a more inclusive and rewarding education for the child with a disability.

This book will provide parents, people with disabilities, professionals and clinicians thinking about special education advocacy with an overview of current disability law and how it works, identifying practical ways for building positive and effective relationships with schools.
